Alderbrook Dry Creek Valley Old Vine Zinfandel 2003

12832

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2005 Edition

89points: This is one of Alderbrook’s more successful wines. It’s classic Dry Creek, ripe and zesty, with a pleasing balance of peppery fruit, alcohol and tannins. Achieves real claret-like structure, while never losing Zin’s wild and woolly side.

Allegrini Verona Amarone 2005

11584

WINE ADVOCATE – October, 2009 Edition

89points: The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a big, fat, super-ripe wine boasting tons of richness in its dark fruit, spices and chocolate. Despite its concentration, this medium-bodied Amarone remains the product of an average harvest and the wine’s modest structure can’t quite measure up to the 100% new French oak. As always, Allegrini makes one of the more accessible Amarones readers are likely to encounter. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Allegrini Verona La Grola 2005

11856

WINE SPECTATOR – April 30th, 2009 Edition

90points:  Shows tarry black fruit, with a light raisiny edge.  Full-bodied, with silky, fruit-coated tannins and a clean, well-structured finish that shows persistent fruit.  There are notes of citrus fruits as well.  Nicely done.  Best after 2009.

Allegrini Verona Palazzo Della Torre 2006

14914

WINE ADVOCATE – August, 2009 Edition

90points:  The 2006 Palazzo della Torre comes across as somewhat restrained for this wine. This is a very polished, elegant Palazzo della Torre with pretty layers of mocha, spices and new leather that add complexity to the fresh, vibrant fruit. Palazzo della Torre is 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese. The addition of 30% dried fruit (Amarone style) adds an extra dimension of complexity. The retro 1970's label is also quite attractive. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.

Allegrini Verona Valpolicella Classico 2008

11553

WINE ADVOCATE – August, 2009 Edition

87points: The 2008 Valpolicella Classico is a delightful unoaked red. This fresh, vibrant Valpolicella offers plenty of harmony and a long, harmonious close. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2004

18152

WINE ENTHUSIAST – June 2009 Edition

94points: CELLAR SELECTIONAltesino delivers a wonderfully harmonious wine that invites one delicious sip after another thanks to its polished intensity.  Subtle wood shadings appear in the background of bright cherry and blackberry.  Overall, what distinguishes this wine is the snese of focus, sharpness and purity.

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2004

11178 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – June 2009 Edition

93points:  We preferred Altesino’s base Brunello to its cru selection from the estate’s special 10-acre vineyard – but only by the smallest of margins.  Montosoli is a tremendous wine with impressive intensity and staying power that takes shape as cherry, tobacco, spice and bursting blueberry.  Drink from 2010 through 2020.

Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Noir 2007

11582

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2009 Edition

92points:  EDITOR’S CHOICEAmisfield has been on a hot streak, and the 2007 continues that roll.  The aromas show wonderfully high-toned cherry fruit, with a slightly herbal element that adds welcome complexity.  In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with its black cherry fruit framed by a hint of vanilla.  Long and lush on the finish, this looks to be at its best now for the next several years.

WINE SPECTATOR – April 30th, 2009 Edition

90points:  Bright and focused, with a lively balance of acidity to the ripe currant and floral flavors, persisting nicely on the finish.  Best from 2010 through 2015.

Amisfield Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc 2006

14333

Amisfield Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc 2007

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2008 Edition

88points: A crisp lean style, with simple grapefruity flavors, but showing admirable concentration and length on the finish.  This would pair well with various ceviche preparations or sauced flatfish like sole or flounder.

WINE & SPIRITS – February, 2008 Edition

90points:  Bold scents of kiwi and cut grass meet equally powerful acidity in this intense sauvignon.  Earthy smoke lingers in the finish, and extends as the wine takes on air.  This is a rich white that needs bottle time to mellow.

Andretti North Coast Zinfandel 2005

11201

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 1st, 2007 Edition

87points:  Here’s a classic expression of California Zinfandel.  Shows the variety’s rich wild berry, cherry, spice and tobacco flavors with that slightly rustic, briary edge of wildness.  Finishes dry and cleanly tannic.

Ayala Brut Majeur Champagne N/V

12179 (6 Pack)

WINE & SPIRITS – December, 2009 Edition

89pointsBEST BUYLush red apple flavors and cool, leesy mineral character combine in this clean, full-bodied Champagne.  Its gentle, slightly sweet fruit will match crab.

Ayala Brut Rose Majeur Champagne N/V

13733 (6 Pack)

WINE SPECTATOR – November 30th, 2009 Edition

90points:  Light-weight and delicate, yet with a dry profile framing strawberry, cherry and red currant flavors.  There’s grip, but also a harmony that continues into the lingering finish.  Drink now through 2011.

Ballast Stone South Eastern Australia Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

17001

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 1st, 2007 Edition

89points:  A blend of estate-grown fruit from Currency Creek and McLaren Vale, the flagship label of the Ballast Stone line represents a solid value. Cassis fruit is showcased admirably by hints of eucalyptus and wood-derived accents of toasted coconut and vanilla. While the texture is surprisingly lush and the finish velvety.

WINE SPECTATOR – March 31st, 2007 Edition

88points: Dense in flavor and firm in texture, with raspberry, tobacco and plum flavors that mingle against fine-grained tannins. The finish swells. Best from 2008 through 2012.

Ballast Stone Estate McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006

14519

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best of the Year, 2009

87points:  Not a wine for the faint of heart.  Alluring notes of raspberry, blackberry, smoke and coconut set the scene for powerful flavors of strawberry and black pepper in the mouth.  Tannins are abundant but polished.  The finish is a bit of a disappointment, with a whisper of astringency and a huge hit of coconut.  Still, well done and fairly priced.  Drink with steak.

Barossa Valley Estate Barossa Valley Ebenezer 2004

12836 (6 Pack)

Barossa Valley Estate Barossa Valley Ebenezer 2005

WINE ENTHUSIAST – June 2009 Edition

89points:  Shows greater fruit character and purity than the roasted 2003, with blackberry flavors nicely framed by vanilla oak and meaty, savory notes.  Firm on the finish, suggesting an optimum drinking window of 2009 – 2016.

WINE SPECTATOR – September 30th, 2009 Edition

90points:  Dark and brooding, with black frit and licorice flavors balanced with lively acidity and fine tannins, showing integrity as the finish rolls on well.  Drink now through 2014.

Belgrano Mendoza “The HeadSnapper” Malbec 2007

13261

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best Of Year 2008 Edition

88points:  This wine purports to cause whiplash, supposedly because it’s so good, hence the “HeadSnapper” name.  And while that’s not likely to take place, its blackberry, toast and brambly undercurrent give it character, while the finish is cushioned and long, albeit a touch oaky.  Healthy and very much worth a look, even if it won’t cause your head to snap.

Big House California Pink 2007

11226

WINE ENTHUSIAST – April 2009 Edition

88points:  Most California roses are sweet, but this one, an unusual blend of Primitivo, Syrah, Carignane and several others, is mercifully dry.  It’s also quite crisp, which allows the palate to savor the herb-tinged raspberry, vanilla and lavender flavors.  A great success at this price.

Big House California White 2008

11224

WINE ENTHUSIAST – October, 2009 Edition

90pointsBEST BUYContinues the solid trend of this label producing some of the best values in California.  Dry, crisp and delicious, with mineral-infused flavors of oranges, honeysuckle and buttered toast.  A blend of Malvasia Bianca, Muscat Canelli, Viognier and Roussanne.

B.R. Cohn Sonoma Valley Olive Hill Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

12612 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best of the Year, 2009

88points:  A very nice 100% Cab that will benefit from 3-5 years in the cellar.  Right now, it’s locked down in tannins, with an astringent hardness.  Yet it’s elegantly constructed, with a fine core of black currants and cedar.

Burgess Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

13952

WINE & SPIRITS – December, 2009 Edition

90points:  Heady and intense, this defines Napa Cabernet with its huge, vibrant black cherry flavors intensified by alcohol and oak.  Packed with enough ripe fruit and tannin to melt through a sirloin grilled rare.

Cade Napa Valley Napa Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

11605

WINE ENTHUSIAST – August, 2009 Edition

92points:  Very finely structured, with gorgeously ripe tannins that show the astringency of youth.  They frame the lush flavors of blackberries, cassis, chocolate, violets, anise and smoky cedar in this Bordeaux blend.  Best now, for its youthful opulence.

WINE SPECTATOR – June 30th, 2009 Edition

91points:  Rich, vibrant, even powerful grapey currant, blackberry an d wild berry fruit is intense, full-bodied, concentrated and a bit rustic in its measure of tannins.  Ends with chewy fruit and hints of mint and herb.  Needs time.  Best from 2011 through 2018.

Cade Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2007

11944

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2008 Edition

88points:  Vibrant, with lemon-lime and passion fruit flavors that are juicy and refreshing.  Herbal, grassy notes come in on the finish.  Drink now.

Campo Viejo Rioja Gran Reserva 2002

14603

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2009 Edition

87points:  Campo Viejo Gran Reserva is normally an excellent wine, but in 2002 it’s good but unspectacular.  The nose is solid yet not real precise or alluring, while the flavors of plum, black cherry and cola are about as ripe and appealing as one might expect from a cool, rainy year.  A little thin on the finish, but lively as a whole.  Drink now.

CARO Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon / Malbec 2005

11250

CARO Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon / Malbec 2006

WINE SPECTATOR – June 15th, 2008 Edition

90points:  Polished and focused, with a core of currant fig, cedar and coffee notes that stays streamlined through the full-bodied finish.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.  Drink now through 2012.

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2008 Edition

91points:  Very solid, with dark, winey currant and fig sauce notes laced with shaved vanilla, cedar, and coffee and sweet, dark olive notes lingering on fine-grained but noticeable tannins.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.  Best from 2009 through 2013.

WINE & SPIRITS – February, 2009 Edition

90points:  A warm and robust blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a dense layer of tart black fruit that battle for primacy with the alcohol.  The texture is firm enough to handle the weight, though the wine needs several years in the cellar to mature.

Chateau A d’Aussieres Corbieres 2004

12909

WINE & SPIRITS – February, 2008 Edition

88points:  This red’s earthy, chewy fruit has a black raspberry rasp, simple and mouthwatering.

Chateau Haut-Surget Lalande-de-Pomerol 2006

17058

WINE & SPIRITS – December, 2009 Edition

89points:  BEST BUYOak brings our licorice and clove scents in this black, mineral-inflected wine, while the fruit contrasts freshness with a raisined edge.  The minerality shows in the tannin’s grip, apparent in many ’06 Right Bank wines.  A crowd-pleasing style, this is built for a year or two of age and a steak.

WINE SPECTATOR – March 31st, 2009 Edition

88points:  Blackberry and wet earth aromas follow through to a medium body, with a good core of fruit ans a mineral and berry aftertaste.  Structured and polished.  Best after 2010

14287 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2009 Edition

89points:  Needs some time in the cellar to resolve the ponderous tannins, and to let the extremely ripe fruit marry with the oak over-lay.  With strong flavors of blackberries, currants, plums, dark chocolate and cedar, it should start to knit together after 2010.

Grant Burge Barossa Valley Holy Trinity 2003

11011 (6 Pack)

WINE ADVOCATE – October #173, 2007 Edition

91points: Grant Burge’s best known wine, The Holy Trinity, is an SGM blend. The 2003 The Holy Trinity is composed of 39% Grenache, 37% Shiraz, and 24% Mourvedre. It presents an enticing nose of earth, garrigue, sage, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Fleshy, ripe, and full-flavored, it is slightly narrow in the finish. Drink it over the next 10 years. Grant Burge and Burge Family Winemakers have a familial but not philosophical connection. One is big, the other an artisanal, hands-on operation. Not that big is bad as this Grant Burge lineup demonstrated.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – November 1st, 2007 Edition

89points: The 2003 Holy Trinity is slightly bigger and riper than the extremely stylish 2002, but also a touch less complex. Hogue Columbia Valley Genesis Riesling 2007

12725

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best Of Year 2008 Edition

88points: This is 100% Riesling, fermented to 1.6% residual sugar and 13% alcohol – in other words, it was quite ripe when picked.  The ripeness shows in the extra weight and depth, yet the acids are there in abundance, and the wine centers on a sweet and tart, concentrated lemon drop character.  You’ll also pick up Mandarin orange and tangerine as it sails into a tangy, ripely satisfying finish.

Hogue Columbia Valley Merlot 2007

WINE ENTHUSIAST – May, 2009 Edition

87points:  Hogue is back as a value player.  This is a fine effort; ripe enough to avoid the greenies, and showing some detail and cut to the tannins.  There’s nothing wimpy here; it’s got some chewy red fruits backed with earthy tannins, acids proportionate, and a finish that’s just under 14% alcohol.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best of the Year, 2009

Leasingham Clare Valley Bin 61 Shiraz 2005

11301

WINE & SPIRITS – February, 2009 Edition

89pointsBEST BUYThis wine feels sleek and well crafted, taking its time to show the tarry tannins that provide some structure to all the fig and chocolate fruitiness.  It’s a ripe black wine to decant for boar or other gamey meats.

Le Dix de Los Vascos Colchagua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR – March, 2009

88pointsPale yellow.  Pungent, varietally accurate aromas of lime, herbs and smoky minerals.  Brisk citrus flavors stain the palate, given depth by a subtle not of pear.  Light-bodied and refreshing, finishing with good cut and clarity.  This will work well as an aperitif.

Louis Latour Marsannay Rouge 2006

14739

WINE ENTHUSIAST – October, 2004 Edition

MacRostie Carneros Pinot Noir 2007

12507

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2009 Edition

WINE ENTHUSIAST – October, 2004 Edition

92points:  Structure marks this fine wine, made from MacRostie’s signature vineyard.  Although you’ll find a wealth of pineapples, Fuji apples and ripe pears, it has a minerality that makes it firm, and a clean, acidic finish.  Elegant and classy, and could age for six years.

MacRostie Sonoma Coast Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2008 Edition

93points:  This is a big, gutsy Pinot Noir, the kind purists object to as being Rhone-like.  But that’s what MacRostie’s vineyard gives them, and the wine is brilliant in its power and California deliciousness.  With thick tannins but a silky texture, it offers waves of raspberries, cherries, currants, pomegranates, baker’s chocolate and cola.  Should develop well over the next six years.

WINE SPECTATOR – May 31st, 2008 Edition

89points:  sleek and trim, with focused spice, pepper, wild berry and floral scents that are well-structured, finishing with a subtle flash of spicy berry fruit.  Drink now through 2012.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – August, 2009 Edition

93points:  This is always a tight, dry, tannic Pinot Noir due to its cool, low-yielding vineyard.  The ’06 is a very dine example.  It’s astringent and closed, but with a luscious heart of black cherries, red currants and Dr. Pepper cola.  With decanting, it’s fine now with something rich, like wild mushroom risotto, and should develop through 2012.

WINE SPECTATOR – June 30th, 2009 Edition

89points:  This delivers an elegant beam of black cherry and blackberry fruit, with lively acidity and firm yet supple tannins.  Drink now through 2013.

Marimar Estate Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard Acero Chardonnay 2006

14202

Marimar Estate Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard Acero Chardonnay 2007

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 1st, 2007 Edition

87points: This unoaked Chard is bright and exuberant in ripe green fruits, such as Granny Smith apples, kiwis, limes, table grapes and mangoes. Acidity in this cool vintage is very high, and when I tasted it, it still had some fizzy fermentation. Technically this is a flaw, but it didn’t interfere with my enjoyment.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – February, 2009 Edition

93points:  A terrific Chardonnay, brilliantly structured, with a crisply acidic minerality under girding rich flavors of pineapple brûlée, ripe white peach, gingerbread and creamy lees.  Addictively good despite being entirely unoaked.

Marimar Estate Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard Chardonnay 2006

10729

WINE ENTHUSIAST – July, 2008 Edition

88points:  Oaky, dry and acidic, this Chard is saved by the ripeness of the underlying fruit, which gives green apple, peach, pear and pineapple flavors.  The acidity hangs in there all the way through the tart finish.

Marimar Torres Russian River Valley Don Miquel Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005

13080

WINE ENTHUSIAST – July, 2008 Edition

91points:  Marimar’s Don Miguel Pinot Noir typically starts out as a tannic, fairly closed young wine that needs some bottle age.  The ’05, from a cool vintage, accentuate that tightness, offering a slightly bitter wine housing cherry, currant, cola, mocha and oak flavors.  It’s very dry and complex, and will easily age for many years.

WINE ENTHUSIAST - February, 2009 Edition

94points:  This vineyard, in the cool Green Valley part of the valley, continues to produce outstanding ageworthy Pinot Noirs of distinction.  The ’06 is a large, powerful wine, distinctly Californian, packed with cherry, cranberry, cola and spice flavors that are immature in their fresh jamminess.  But with a dramatic tannin-acid structure, and just –right touch of New French oak, it will improve in the cellar.  Best after 2010.

Nobilo East Coast Pinot Grigio 2008

12808

WINE SPECTATOR – April 30th, 2009 Edition

87points:  Light and refreshing.  A grapefruit note adds interest to the pear and mineral flavors, finishing dry.  Drink now.

Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008

17084

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2009 Edition

87points:  With more than a quarter of million cases of this wine coming to the U.S., Nobilo’s Regional Collection SB will turn up on a lot of tables over the summer – and justifiably so.  It’s a very good rendition of the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, offering grassy aromas and flavors backed by lime and grapefruit.  It’s plump enough to have mass appeal, with a refreshingly crisp finish.  Like almost all NZ Savies, it should be consumed over the next 6 – 9 months.

Prunotto Piedmont Barbaresco 2004

11033

WINE ADVOCATE – October #173, 2007 Edition

91points: The 2004 Barbaresco is a very pretty, layered wine. Vibrant and fresh on the palate, it offers sweet dark fruit, menthol and spices with outstanding length and terrific harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019.

Raymond Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

11256 (6 Pack)

Raymond Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2007 Edition

88points: Intense and vibrant, with a strong espresso bean edge to the dried cherry and plum flavors. Complex and well-proportioned, finishing with a rich aftertaste. Drink now through 2012.

WINE ENTHUSIAST - February, 2009 Edition

91points:  Here’s a beautifully structured young Cabernet.  It brims with currant, herb and cedar flavors that finish in a swirl of spices.  The tannins are pronounced.  Very finely ground, they give the wine the ability to age for a decade.

Raymond St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

13790 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST - February, 2009 Edition

90points:  A very lush, delicious Cabernet, ready to drink now for its softly oaked flavors of black currants, mocha and ripe plums.  But it has the tannic structure to age gracefully for six years.

Raymond Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2006

12208

WINE ENTHUSIAST – June 2009 Edition

92points:  A beautiful Cabernet.  Pretty tannic now, so if you drink, decant, and have with rich, oily meats and cheeses.  But the heart of black cherries, and cassis, and the overall balance, enable this wine to develop over the next 6-8 years.

Raymond Napa Valley Chardonnay Reserve 2007

11306

BEVERAGE DYNAMICS – July/Aug., 2009 Edition

92points:  Floral aromas, with citrus notes; rich and bright flavors, especially pear and peach; a nice finish; pairs well with chicken dishes and a variety of seafood.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – May, 2009 Edition

87points:  There’s an earthiness to this Chard, reminiscent of sweet fresh sage, along with savory flavors of oranges, pineapples and vanilla.  It’s a nice, easy wine for drinking now.

Raymond Napa Valley R Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

14311

WINE ENTHUSIAST – May, 2009 Edition

87points:  A very nice Cabernet showing polish and elegance and real Napa structure.  Raymond’s signature understanding of Cabernet shows in the ripe, dry flavors of black currants, cherries and herbs.  Drink now.

Raymond California R Collection Merlot 2006

12202

WINE ENTHUSIAST – Best of the Year, 2009

87pointsEDITOR’S CHOICEA beautiful wine, easily able to stand beside more expensive ones.  Made with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, it’s soft, dry and complex, showing flavors of cherries, berries currants and herbs.

Sandeman Douro 10 Year Old Tawny

10144 (6 Pack)

WINE & SPIRITS – December, 2009 Edition

90points:  The color falls at the intersection of tawny and ruby, pointing to the freshness that’s apparent in the taste of the wine.  The youthful fruit character lasts beyond substantial tannins, balancing the wine with density, firmness and length.  A substantive 10-Year-Old to serve with a savory pear and almond tart.

WINE ENTHUSIAST - February, 2009 Edition

88points:  This has a fine bite, offering its richness on the edge of a knife.  Wood and fruit tannins are very evident, giving the concentration a dry, fresh core, over which dried fruit flavors pass.  It has some age to it, as if there are older wines in the blend.

Sandeman Douro 20 Year Old Tawny

10181 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2008 Edition

93pointsEDITIOR’S CHOICEAn elegant tawny, perfumed with soft tannins and a good edge of wood acidity and spirit.  The wine is dry, densely flavored, tasting mature, showing a good balance between young sweetness and age, with everything well integrated.

Sandeman Douro 30 Year Old Tawny

12006 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST - February, 2009 Edition

91points:  EDITOR’S CHOICESandeman’s aged tawnys have a definite dryness, the wood an important part of the wine.  While they are dry, the weight of rich, dried fruit flavors gives a good balance.  Acidity mingles with the fruit, enriching the burnt character, giving a wine that is intensely rich rather than sweet.

Sandeman Douro 40 Year Old Tawny

10245 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2008 Edition

93points:  Dark raisin and dried apricot flavors manifest on this immensely dark, old gold-hued wine.  Enormous concentration, as with the initially, almost painful acidity that comes through the spirit.  This is an old wine, no question, but not too old, one to be savored in sips with all the flavors working at high intensity.

Sandeman Douro Vau Vintage 2000

10003 (6 Pack)

WINE ADVOCATE – October #143, 2002 Edition

90points: The dense purple-colored, seriously-structured 2000 Vau Vintage reveals outstanding ripeness in addition to abundant amounts of black currant, cassis, and mineral characteristics as well as firm tannin in the finish. Fuller-bodied, richer, and significantly more impressive than its sibling, it will drink well between 2007-2020.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – November 15th, 2003 Edition

90points: Intentionally made in a friendly, fruit-forward style, Vau doesn’t disappoint in 2000. It delivers what we’ve come to expect from this relatively recent creation, lush blackberry and plum flavors backed by clove and spice. If you like your Ports young and fruity, try this one soon; its longevity is untested.

Sandeman Douro Vintage Port 2007

12245 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2009 Edition

90points:  An immensely tannic wine, dark and solid.  The fruit at this stage is less apparent, with the spirit and structure dominant.  A wine to watch as it develops, and probably for aging.

Sandeman Douro Founders Reserve Port N/V

10051

WINE ENTHUSIAST – December 15th, 2008 Edition

87points:  Relatively dry, this has some firm tannins, darkened by plum skin flavors and ripe berries, lifted with acidity.  The spirit element comes through as pepper and spice, giving an edge to the soft fruit.

Seghesio Sonoma County Four Generations Omaggio 2005

10180 (6 Pack Wood)

WINE SPECTATOR – December 15th, 2008 Edition

90points:  Elegant and refined, with complex, understated loamy currant, sage, anise and blueberry, keeping a tight focus and ending with integrated tannins.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.  Best from 2009 through 2015.

Seghesio Sonoma County Sonoma Zinfandel 2008

11883

WINE SPECTATOR – Jan. 31/Feb. 28, 2010, Edition

88points:  Briary and zesty, with dried sage and wild berry aromas and tightly wound cracked pepper, dried cherry and licorice flavors that finish with slightly rustic tannins.  Best from 2011 through 2014.

Shafer Stags Leap District Napa Valley One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

11243

WINE & SPIRITS – August, 2009 Edition

94points:  In the 2004 vintage, the Shafers replaced their Napa Valley Cabernet with One Point Five.  The wine is based on the family’s hillside estate vineyards and the 25-acre Borderline Vineyard, which the Shafers acquired in 1999, both in SLD’s southeastern corner of the Napa Valley.  This wine doesn’t have the detail of their famed Hillside Select, but it’s remarkably close in quality.  The texture, that signal aspect of SLD fruit, is layered and as rich as French roast coffee, with an underlying tension that keeps the wine focused on high-toned red fruit, dark earth and violet scents.  It’s powerful and guarded when first poured, growing sleek and classical with a day of air.  This should drink increasingly well over the next ten years.

WINE ENTHUSIAST – October, 2009 Edition

90points:  Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with 1% Petite Verdot, this big, tannic wine may well age, but right now it’s a bit disjointed.  Shows candied flavors of cherries, plums, chocolate and herbs, with smoky caramel from new oak.  Gets better in the glass as it breathes.  Try after 2010.

Shafer Napa Valley Carneros Red Shoulders Ranch Chardonnay 2007

11161

WINE SPECTATOR – June 30th, 2009 Edition

93points: Clean, crisp and flinty, with a mix of green apple, lime, quince and spicy hazelnut notes that are pure and focused, gaining depth on the finish.  Drink now through 2012.

Steininger Kamptal Riesling Brut 2006

10710 (6 Pack)

WINE ENTHUSIAST – August, 2008 Edition

90points:  A delicious, creamy, perfumed wine, all fresh acidity, lively white fruits and softness.  The acidity is infectious, giving great lift to this enjoyably crisp wine.

Tiefenbrunner Alto Aldige Pinot Grigio 2008

13707

WINE ADVOCATE – August, 2009 Edition

87points:  The 2008 Pinot Grigio is pretty, refined and elegant in its expression of fruit. As delicious as the wine is, this Pinot Grigio – an IGT from the delle Venezie appellation – doesn’t quite have the pedigree or complexity of the finest Pinot Grigios from Alto Adige. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.

Trimbach Alsace Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling 2004

10276

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2009 Edition

92points:  Peat smoke and forest floor notes accent the dried apricot, candied orange peel, sea salt and star fruit flavors, followed by a modest finish.  This well-integrated, elegant wine is just beginning to show some age, but the firm acidity suggests many more years to come.  Drink now through 2020.

Trimbach Alsace Gewurztraminer 2006

10092

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2009 Edition

89points:  This dry, light-bodied white has a minerally undertow to its flavors of grapefruit, smoke, orange granita and spice.  There’s good balance, with a modest finish.  Drink now through 2016.

Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Reserve 2005

10117

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2009 Edition

89points:  A dry white, with hints of honey accenting the subtle star fruit, orange zest and apple flavors.  This has a pleasant, juicy balance, with well-messhed acidity and lingering beeswax and nut notes on the finish.  Drink now through 2019.

Trimbach Alsace Riesling 2007

2007

10038

WINE SPECTATOR – November 15th, 2009 Edition

91points:  TOP 100 WINES OF 2009 #55This peach and crushed pine needle flavors, with hints of brine and smoke.  There’s racy acidity, but it’s well-meshed, and a mineral note lingers on the dlicate finish.  Drink now through 2015.

Two Angels Maycamas Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

11833

WINE ENTHUSIAST – August, 2009 Edition

87points:  Rich and fruity, a voluptuous Cab with flavors of blackberries, black currants and cocoa, with notes of raisins and a nice appliqué of toasty cedar.  Good over the next few years.

Two Angels High Valley Petite Sirah 2006

12079

WINE ENTHUSIAST – August, 2009 Edition

90points:  If you’re a Petite Sirah fan you’ll love the richness and power of this one, from an appellation in Lake County.  It’s dry and softly tannic, and notable for an explosion of blackberries, cassis, plums, chocolate, anise, black pepper and sandalwood.

Two Angels High Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2006

11708

WINE ENTHUSIAST September 1st, 2007 Edition
